Fresh Content

Content is king and if the content on your website is old it becomes less relevant to search engines. The initial ranking you received when you first posted your article will not last forever. When Google first started they were going through 25 million websites and it crawled these sites every three to four months. The 25 million sites represented only a small portion of websites around at the time. According to Google “Today we index billions and billions of WebPages, and our index is roughly 100 million gigabytes” but it takes current crawlers only minutes or seconds to update the status after it is posted.

Creation Date

The freshness status is based on the date it was created and as time goes by it starts to decline. The first instance Google or another search engine becomes aware of your content is the inception date. This awareness is based by the discovery of the article or any links attached to your article. Keeping track of the initial score of your article will give you an indication how it fairs as it gets older to the same or different queries.

Changes to Content

In order to avoid creating original article site owners will change certain segments of the page in the hopes that Google will see it as fresh content. Google places very little value changes made to advertisements, navigation, JavaScript and content below the fold. Content relevant to the message of the article is generally placed in the main body which is above the fold. If you don’t make the right change Google will ignore or not place enough weight on it to call for any change regarding your website. The changes you make to your content have to be substantial enough to justify Google making an adjustment.

Getting Fresh Content

Sites with fresh content get higher freshness score from Google and this translates to higher ranking and more traffic. Updating your content to answer new queries regarding your business will ensure your site stays relevant with your customers and search engines.
